How to store soap so it lasts longer
In short: A bar of soap lasts longest when it can dry all the way round after every use. In the bathroom that means hanging freely or resting on a draining rack, not sitting in a puddle and not in the direct spray of the shower. Store spare soaps dry, airy and out of the sun, for example in the linen cupboard.
Why soap disappears so quickly in the bathroom
Soap dissolves in water. That is the point when you wash your hands, but not afterwards. If a bar sits in a dish where water collects, it keeps dissolving even when nobody uses it. The underside turns soft and slimy, residue sticks to the dish and part of the soap goes down the drain unused. How long a bar lasts therefore depends less on how often you use it and more on how quickly it dries again.
Soap in the bathroom: the options compared
| Storage | Does the soap dry? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Closed soap dish | poorly, water stays under the bar | soap softens from below |
| Dish with rack or drain | better, contact surface stays damp | rinse regularly |
| Sisal soap bag | medium, hangs freely | the bag stays wet for a long time |
| Magnetic soap holder on the wall | very well, air all round | press a bottle cap into the soap, hang it up |

6 tips to make soap last longer
- Hang it, don't lay it down. The less surface touches anything, the faster the bar dries. A magnetic soap holder holds the soap by a bottle cap, nothing touches the underside.
- Keep it out of the spray. In the shower, pick a spot the water does not hit directly.
- Don't hold soap under running water. Wet your hands instead and turn the bar briefly between them.
- Air the bathroom. Nothing dries properly in a damp room.
- Cut large bars in half. One half in the bathroom, the other stays dry in the cupboard.
- Don't throw away the last bit. Moisten a small leftover and press it onto a new bar.
Storing spare soap
New soaps like it dry, airy and dark. A linen or bathroom cupboard is ideal, a damp bathroom shelf or a sunny spot less so. Take soaps out of plastic wrap and keep them in paper or unwrapped so they can breathe. Handmade soaps with a lot of plant oil in particular can lose their scent or develop spots over time in heat and light. Tucked between your linen, a bar of soap also gives the cupboard a nice scent.
Storing soap with a magnetic holder
How it works with Soapi: press the holder onto tile, glass or a mirror with its waterproof adhesive pad, no drilling. Moisten the soap briefly and press an ordinary drinks bottle cap halfway in. The jagged edge grips the soap, the magnet holds the cap. Soapi holds soaps up to 250 g, including shampoo bars. The holder itself cannot rust because the magnet is fully enclosed in plastic.
Frequently asked questions
How should I store soap so it lasts longer?
In the bathroom, so it can dry all the way round after every use: hanging freely on a magnetic holder or on a draining rack, out of the spray. Keep spare bars dry, airy and dark, for example in the linen cupboard.
Why does my soap get mushy?
Because it sits in water after washing. Soap keeps dissolving when wet, even if it is not being used. Letting it hang freely and keeping it out of the spray helps most.
Is a soap dish bad for soap?
A closed dish without drainage is, because water collects in it. Dishes with a rack or drain are better. Soap stays driest when it hangs freely.
How do I store spare soap?
Dry, airy and out of direct sunlight, ideally without plastic wrap, for example in a linen or bathroom cupboard. Not on a damp bathroom shelf.
Can I still use soap leftovers?
Yes. Moisten the leftover slightly and press it onto a new bar. Once both have dried, they stick together.
Does a magnetic soap holder hold any soap?
Almost any bar of soap or shampoo bar you can press a bottle cap into. Soapi holds bars up to 250 g, most soaps weigh 80 to 150 g.
