Gifts for Neighbours: Small Gestures That Really Land

Good neighbours are worth their weight in gold. They take in your parcels, water the plants while you're away, lend you the drill you didn't need after all, and still say hello when your party ran a bit late. A small thank you is in order. The tricky part: gifts for neighbours are a discipline of their own. Too big and it feels odd, too small and it looks like an afterthought. Here are ideas that sit nicely in between.

Small gifts for neighbours: what matters

With neighbours you often only know bits and pieces: who has children, who has a dog, who likes to cook. So the gifts that work are the ones that:

  • are small, so nobody feels they have to give something big in return,
  • can be handed over quickly at the door, without a coffee invitation,
  • get used up or used daily, so they don't take up shelf space,
  • come with a few personal lines. A handwritten note often means more than the gift itself.

Three occasions, three sets of ideas

At Christmas

  • Home-made biscuits in a tin or bag. The classic, because it looks like effort and smells of butter.
  • A small star or sprig of greenery for the front door, a lovely gesture for older neighbours in particular.
  • Mulling spices or a syrup in a jar, home-made or from the market.
  • A Soapi with a bar of soap: small, useful, and it hangs in the bathroom every day afterwards. More on that below.

As a thank you for taking in parcels

Someone who regularly takes in your deliveries deserves more than a quick "cheers". A good bar of chocolate, a slice of cake from the bakery or a small bottle of something they enjoy is plenty. Another fit: a magnetic key holder for €11.95. It holds a set of keys without drilling on smooth surfaces by the door, such as tiles, glass, metal or a smooth door. A gift with a wink: if they're already looking after your parcels, at least their own keys should have a proper home.

To welcome new neighbours

  • Bread and salt, the traditional welcome. A fresh loaf from your favourite local bakery doubles as a tip for the newcomers.
  • A plant, ideally an easy one such as a pot of kitchen herbs.
  • A note with local tips: which corner shop stays open latest, when the bins go out, where to get the best coffee.
  • Something for the new bathroom: when you move in, it's often the small bits that are missing. A soap holder that goes up without drilling is more practical than the tenth candle.

Soapi and solid soap as a small, useful gesture

Soap is an underrated neighbourly gift: everyone needs it, it smells nice, and it gets used up rather than sitting around. A Soapi turns it into something that stays. You press a bottle cap halfway into a bar of soap, and the bar hangs from the magnet on the wall and dries all the way round instead of going soggy in a dish. The basin stays clean, and the soap lasts longer because it can dry out between uses.

The easiest option is the Starter Kit for €14.95: a Soapi in the colour of your choice, a lavender soap from Marseille, 100 g, handmade in Marseille, and a cleaned bottle cap. Everything's included and ready to go. The Soapi goes up with a waterproof adhesive pad, no drilling, and holds securely on smooth surfaces such as tiles, glass or mirrors. That's handy in rented flats, as it comes off tiles and glass without leaving residue.

If the soap on its own is enough, have a look at our range of soaps and solid shampoos.

Several neighbours? Mix & Match

In a block of flats you quickly end up with four or five doors you'd like to knock on. That's what Mix & Match is for: choose 5 products, pay €50, shipping within Germany is free. That's €10 per gift, and every household gets something different. For example a Mint Soapi for the family on the ground floor, a key holder for the neighbour who's always taking in parcels, a My Happy Cow children's soap for the little ones on the second floor (from age 3), and a Marseille soap plus a solid shampoo for the couple in the attic flat. It works in much the same way for small Christmas gifts for colleagues.

You'll need to wrap them yourself, as we don't include gift wrapping. But a bit of brown paper, string and a sprig of fir or rosemary look good on any doorstep.

FAQ

How much should a gift for a neighbour cost?

Usually €5 to €15 is enough. More important than the price is that it's sincere and nobody feels obliged to give something big back.

What do you give neighbours you barely know?

Something neutral that gets used up or used daily: biscuits, a plant, a good bar of soap. Add a few lines with your name and flat number.

Can the Soapi go up in a rented flat?

Yes. It sticks on without drilling on smooth surfaces and comes off tiles and glass without residue. For the next place there's a replacement adhesive pad for €1. It shouldn't be stuck onto painted or wallpapered walls.

In short

Good gifts for neighbours are small, friendly and come with a few honest words. Biscuits, a plant or a Soapi with soap all say the same thing: nice to have you here. And if you'd like to cover the whole building in one go, put together your Mix & Match bundle: 5 items for €50.
