Mindful gifting: fewer, better gifts with meaning
Every year the same picture: by January there is a scented candle set, a mug with a slogan and a gadget that went into a drawer after two days, all sitting about somewhere. If you want to practise mindful gifting, that is exactly what you are trying to avoid. It is not about giving less for the sake of it, but about an attitude: fewer, but better. A gift with meaning suits the person, gets used and says something about the two of you. Here are six questions that help you choose, and ideas that pass them.
What does mindful gifting mean?
Above all, it means looking closely before you buy. Who is this person, what does their everyday life look like, what is actually missing? A small shift in thinking often helps. Instead of “What can I give her?”, ask: “What would make her day a little nicer?”
If you are mainly interested in materials, packaging and production, there is a detailed checklist in our article Sustainable gifts: what to look for. This piece is about the step before that: how to choose.
6 questions for gifts with meaning
1. Will they hold it in their hands in an ordinary week?
The most honest question first. A gift that is used every day reminds them of you a little every day.
2. Will it be used for a long time?
A good knife, a solid flask, a wool jumper: things that stay in use for years become more personal over time. A written guarantee from the maker is a good sign.
3. Can it be repaired, or a part replaced?
When a part wears out, the whole thing does not have to go. Replacement blades, new soles, a swappable battery: giving something like that also gives the chance to keep it.
4. Will it be used up?
Consumables are often the favourite gift among thoughtful people: good coffee, olive oil from a small farm, loose tea, a beautiful bar of soap. They bring joy, get used and do not end up on a shelf.
5. Do you know where it comes from?
Who made it, where, and does the maker say so openly? An honest label is worth more than a big promise. With the Stone Soap Spa stone soaps in our shop, for example, it is stated clearly: a brand from Norway, made in Thailand, because that is where the ingredients grow.
6. Does it say something about you?
The book you talked about last summer. Meaning rarely comes from the shop, it comes from the story behind it.
Gift ideas that pass the test
- Time and experiences: a cooking evening, concert tickets, a pottery class, a voucher for “I will clean your windows once”. No object, plenty of meaning.
- Something second-hand with a story: a photo book from a flea market, an old camera that still works.
- Something homemade: jam, granola, a photo book of your pictures.
- A lovely bar of soap that smells good and gets used up.
A small thing that stays: Soapi
We make Soapi, so we would rather say plainly what it is than describe it with big words. Soapi is a magnetic soap holder. A bottle cap, from a cola or beer bottle for example, is pressed halfway into a bar of soap. The soap then hangs from the magnet on the wall and dries all round instead of going soft in a dish. The basin stays clean, and a bar that dries lasts longer.
Here is how it does against the questions above:
- Used every day: it hangs where you wash your hands every day.
- Long use: we give a 10 year durability guarantee. The holder cannot rust, because the magnet is fully enclosed in plastic.
- Swappable parts: if a bottle cap ever rusts, simply use a new one. And after a move, the replacement sticker for €1 lets you stick Soapi up again in its new spot.
- Origin: Soapi is injection-moulded in Berlin. The housing is injection-moulded from recycled plastic, around 90 % of which comes from discarded fishing nets and ropes. The nets are processed in Denmark.
To be honest, it is mainly worth it for people who use solid soap or want to try it. A Soapi costs €12.95 and comes in 10 colours. Ready to give is the Starter Kit for €14.95: one Soapi in the colour of your choice, a lavender soap from Marseille, 100 g, handmade in Marseille, and a cleaned bottle cap.

Mindful gifting for lots of people
December often means several small gifts at once. With Mix & Match you pick 5 products instead, pay €50 and shipping within Germany is free. You can combine Soapis in all 10 colours, the key holder, solid soaps, Skargard shampoo bars and children's soaps. That works out at €10 per gift, and every one of them gets used. Browse all soaps in Soaps & Shampoos.

Frequently asked questions
What is a gift with meaning?
One that suits the person and connects to the two of you: a shared memory, a wish they mentioned in passing, or something they use every day. The price matters least.
Is mindful gifting more expensive?
Not necessarily. Buying fewer, more carefully chosen things often means spending less.
In short
Mindful gifting is not a rule but a question to ask before you buy: will it be used, will it last, do I know where it comes from? If you need several small things, put together your own set with Mix & Match. For more ideas, see Small, useful gifts and, for people who like to own little, Gifts for minimalists.
